Legislative Action Division
An important function of the Chamber is
addressing legislative issues that affect the
community on the local, state and federal levels.
The Governmental Affairs Division of the Chamber is
the voice of the business community at the county,
state, and federal level. The Chamber seeks to
represent county businesses every week of the year
in various ways. Whether writing a letter to your
congressman, visiting our state delegation members
during session in Raleigh, testifying at a public
hearing before state transportation officials,
making a phone call to a county commissioner or
simply running into a city councilperson at the
café—the Chamber staff and volunteer representatives
are speaking on behalf of its members, the business
community and, hopefully, most county citizens. The
Chamber works hard to encourage our government
officials to pass laws that increase local commerce
and improve the area’s business climate. The
Chamber sometimes has to work equally hard in
preventing the passage of regulations that might be
costly or burdensome to businesses. The most
difficult aspect of the Chamber's governmental
action program is addressing the "tough"
issues--those that have varying effects on
businesses and the community. Each year, the
Governmental Affairs Division compiles a list of
“action items” called the “Legislative Action
Agenda.” This document provides important
information on how the legislators can work on
behalf of business and industry in Cleveland County.
