Since the opening of the new Visitor Information Center at the mall the Tourism Division has welcomed a new volunteer, Barbara Danner of Shelby.  Barbara is a licensed Real Estate Agent and works as a volunteer at the Visitor Information Center on Monday and Wednesday mornings until 1:00 pm.  Chick-fil-a of the mall is a sponsor of the volunteer program and offers free lunch during the days that Barbara is working.  Sandy Smith remains a faithful volunteer and handles all of the calendar of events information.  We are very grateful to our volunteers and could not be the success we are without their help.

The Visitor Information Center has:
·        Welcomed 310 visitors in the new center.
·        Distributed 91 relocation packets through Real Estate agents.
·        Mailed 175 Visitors Guides to replenish supplies at NC Welcome Centers.
·        Given 126 pieces of tourism literature to people at festivals such as Springs Alive and Foothills Farmers Market.
·        The Historic Shelby Walking Tour brochure is in reprint due to supply being low and demand be very high.

The Springs Alive Festival, Foothills Merry Go Round Festival, Arts on the Square and Grand Opening of the Foothills Farmers Market on April 26 were great success stories for April!  Even with inclement weather the festivals had wonderful attendance.  The Foothills Farmers Market will continue every Wednesday and Saturday, 7am-noon through October.  The market will be relocated on May 7 to the former Sears parking lot on Warren Street due to filming of the movie “Blood Done Sign My Name” in Uptown Shelby.

Travel Council – Next meeting July 29 at Harvest Works
We had 36 people from the community attend the meeting on April 29 hosted by Hallelujah Acres.  Paul Malkmus, welcomed guests and talked about the Hallelujah Acres lifestyle, as well as the thousands of tourists that come to the property each month.  He talked about the development of the Villages of Hallelujah Acres, a community for healthy living.  The newest staff member, Stuart Gilbert, was introduced.  Stuart is very excited about the opportunity to work with Hallelujah Acres and further economic development for Cleveland County.
The attendees of Travel Council always have the opportunity to talk about their organization and what is going on.  Here are some of the highlights.
Red Bone Willies:  Featured in the May issue of Southern Living Magazine.  Redbone Willy's Bluegrass and Peddler's Festival to be held on Saturday, August 30 th from 1-8 pm. It will be located directly behind the store in an open field. We will be featuring “Mama Said” as our opening performers with the "Chatham County Line "  as our headliners.  We will have food vendors and artisans there as well. Everyone is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnic baskets to spend the day.  Tickets are 10.00 with children 12 and under FREE.  704-538-3670
Destination Cleveland County: hosting 4 meetings for citizens to meet Cissy Anklam, the Earl Scruggs Center museum planner.  During these events, Anklam will report master plan progress and identify major themes derived from the design team’s research and engagement with the public.  The public is encouraged to come out to give suggestions, ask questions and learn more.  The master plan is slated for completion in June and will provide broad strokes of what the Scruggs Center will feature and exhibit.   For more information call 704-487-6233.
The Inn of the Patriots:  A new bed and breakfast opening soon in Grover.  One of the owners is a former White House Chef who also cooked in various places around the world.
Kings Mountain:  Robert Morgan will be doing a book signing and dinner to raise money for the Gateway Trails project on May 16.  There will be an evening honoring John Henry Moss on May 10.  Everyone was reminded of the upcoming Triathlon on May 31.  Friday night live will continue to June 27th.
Broad River Greenway:  Saturday night is an owl prowl at the river.  Sunday the Carolina Raptor Center will do a presentation and they are bringing the Eagle.   There is also a Familiarization Tour of other greenways on May 3.
This is just the highlights. Feel free to follow up with questions on any discussions.
The next Travel Council meeting will be July 29 at Harvest Works at noon and lunch will be available for purchase there.  Travel Council serves as the “round table” for all the organizations, attractions and event coordinators of Cleveland County.  Everyone shares a meal together and updates the other groups about each organizations plans, events and issues.  Having a council where everyone has the same goals in mind and can share ideas, frustrations and build partnerships is a wonderful asset for Cleveland County.
October 28 – J. Oliver’s Coffee Shop in Kings Mountain, lunch sponsorship opportunity available
Lunch is sponsored by Chamber member businesses and is always from a food service member in the county.  Sponsorship is $200 and interested organizations should contact Jackie at Jackie@ClevelandChamber.org or (704) 487-8521.
