The Cleveland County Chamber is pleased to announce the recipient of the 23rd annual Athena Award is Denese Stallings with the Cleveland County Health Department. This recognition is given to an exceptional individual who has achieved distinction in her/his business or profession, has served the community in a meaningful way and has assisted women in obtaining leadership training and reaching for professional goals. Stallings received the award in front of an audience of 350 people at the Chamber’s Annual Banquet in January.

As Health Director of Cleveland County Health Department, Denese has served for twenty-one years. Under her leadership, the agency and individual staff members have received many outstanding awards on local and statewide levels.

Denese had a strong voice in encouraging Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Cleveland Community College, the Cleveland County School System and many Cleveland County restaurants to become “tobacco free.”

Her strong leadership skills have served Cleveland residents well.   Stallings made Cleveland County the first county in North Carolina to promote Asthma Awareness Flags at our schools and in the community.

Denese is also responsible for developing and implementing a Cleveland County Employee Health, Wellness and Pharmacy Programs for all county employees which has resulted in tremendous savings for Cleveland County Government.

Denese serves on the several boards in Cleveland County and in North Carolina: chair of the CLECO Primary Care Network Board of Directors, chair for Cleveland County Alliance for Health, United Way, YMCA, and the Partnership for Children. She serves as Secretary/Treasurer for the Cleveland County Sports Commission.

Statewide, she has served as president of the Western North Carolina Public Health Association and is a member of the State and National Public Health Associations.

The ATHENA Award was first presented in 1982 in Lansing, Michigan and has grown to include presentations to more than 5,000 individuals in hundreds of cities in the United States as well as Canada, China, Russia, and the Untied Kingdom. The Award takes the form of a hand-cast bronze sculpture symbolizing the strength, courage and wisdom of the recipients.

The Cleveland County Chamber believes in the values underlying ATHENA International’s Philosophy of incorporating the talent and expertise of women into the leadership of our business, our communities and our government. The sprit of the ATHENA Award Program is captured in a quotation from Plato, “What is honored in a country will be cultivated there.”   By honoring exceptional leaders, others will be encouraged to excel.

Award recipients will be invited to join the thousands of ATHENA Award Recipients worldwide along with other business owners and professionals at the annual international ATHENA leadership Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
