Leadership Cleveland participates in Human Services Day

The day started off as usual in meeting at the Cleveland County Chamber to discuss Maxwell's Developing the Leader Within You amongst the various LCC participants and the incomparable leadership instructor Mrs. Trogdon.
The first stop in the Human Services Day adventure landed us at Adventure House on Lafayette St, in Shelby.  Most LCCers were unfamiliar with what exactly Adventure House is, and what happens at the establishment.  Our arrival was greeted by the presence of Mr. Bryan Eaker, Employment Coordinator, along with a myriad of refreshments available for the participants’ enjoyment.  A slideshow/music video played in the background as the refreshments dwindled and participants waited eagerly for a tour of the house.  Crystal Byers greeted the participants with a warm welcome and a particular choice of words that caught the attention of everyone at the beginning of the tour, "As you may notice, no one has nametags on, and no one is greeted any differently whether they are staff or members."  Crystal gave the tour and showed her knowledge and excitement about Adventure House.  Near the end of the tour Crystal shared that she was in fact a member of Adventure House, not staff, and that she has experienced first hand the good work Adventure House participates in.
The Life Enrichment Center on TR Harris Dr in Shelby was the LCCers second stop of the day.  Mrs. Linda Cabaniss greeted us and shared with us the facilities and work that goes on at the LEC.  She spoke to us about the plans for expansion in Shelby and the staff and member excitement over said expansion.  Some of the folks in the LEC were playing Volley Balloon as we toured.  Linda grabbed a microphone and went around to each LEC member and asked if they would like to say anything.  There was a cute little lady sitting there calm and quiet that spoke up and said "I'm single and if there are any Army or Navy boys in the group I'd like to talk to em'."  All the folks who spoke up had nothing but good things to say about the Life Enrichment Center.
Lisa Abernathy from Cleveland County Council on Aging gave a tour of our third stop, the Neal Senior Center.  She explained that the Senior Center provides activities and social networking for those seniors still able to do things on their own.  She also revealed a highly classified secret that the cafeteria and the coffee shop were open to the public and were very good.  Lunch was served and presentations commenced yet again.  Shilda Pope from the Cleveland County Partnership for Children, Bill Hooker & Susan Young from Cleveland County United Way, and David Ozmore from the Cleveland County Family YMCA spoke about various programs existing within each organization.
The final stop of the day was very familiar to Chavis Gash, a Director of Cleveland County Communities in Schools and member of the LCC team.  Donnie Thurman spoke about the need for volunteers in CIS and the impact on children's lives in makes.  He spoke about a truly inspirational story he experienced first hand and the reward he got simply by loving an individual that he had never met.  Laura Mitchell lead an activity involving various questions:  Who are the five richest people in the world, etc.  The point of the exercise was to show that not everyone knows those people who are supposedly at the pinnacle of their professions.  However, everyone knows someone in their own life who has made a difference.
