LEADERSHIP CLEVELAND Tours Local Healthcare Programs

Leadership Cleveland participated in Health Care Day on February 6, 2008.  Coffee and refreshments were enjoyed while participants discussed Chapter Five, “Problem-Solving”, of John C. Maxwell’s book, Developing the Leader Within You.

Participants traveled to Kings Mountain Hospital and were introduced to a high quality health care system.  Sherri DeShazo, Phyllis Phillips, and Sean Deschamps emphasized to the group how to be effective leaders and coaches.  A unique and creative powerpoint presentation, “…if Disney Ran Your Hospital”, explained Kings Mountain Hospital’s mission and focus.  The group toured the hospital and noted amazing growth and expansion with the facilities and programs, and services.

The group traveled to Hospice and found a boxed lunch from Chick-fil-A waiting for us to enjoy.  Hospice and Palliative Care of Cleveland County provided participants the opportunity to obtain an historical perspective of health care beginning from the 1800’s until the present.  There is “little education” in death/dying issues.  Hospice exists to provide high-quality, skilled, compassionate care and support for patients with a life-limiting illness, their families, and the community regardless of ability to pay.  The group was privileged to engage in conversation with one of the patients…a 100 year old lady; Mrs. Twitty.  She shared some of her wisdom and life experiences that inspired the participants to keep living!

At Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Dottie Leatherwood shared with the group CRMC’s high quality system and emphasized that in order to maintain a high quality, Cleveland County needs more industry. Also, the group became aware of the focus areas of CRMC as well as the community benefits provided by hospital.  A tour was conducted by Vice President of Operation, Alex Bell.   The group was treated with a “goodie bag” filled by CRMC.

The group walked across the street to Care Solutions.  Jane Wright welcomed the group and provided much needed snacks and drinks.  The participants learned how adults can be linked to services and solutions that help with the challenges of aging.  Care Solutions is a care management service that was created by thirty-three different agencies.  There goal is to help the person live safely in their own environment.

It is comforting to know that a variety of quality healthcare systems and services exits in Cleveland County.  The exposure to the systems and the services equipped Leadership Cleveland County participants to be leaders, problem-solvers, and to share with others what is available in Cleveland County.
