The Cleveland County Chamber will be introducing a new series of seminars to its agenda beginning in the month of February.  The Chamber Seminar Series will consist of full and half-day seminars featuring a range of topics from education, workforce, to economic development, etc.  The Chamber will be working closely with the Small Business Center at Cleveland Community College to develop the content of each seminar.  This Chamber Series will be replacing the monthly Lunch & Learn program.

February’s program titled NC Wage and Hour Seminar will be presented by the North Carolina Department of Labor and Federal Department of Labor.  The full day program will be held on Thursday, February 28th at the Neal Senior Center in Shelby from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.  The seminar will:

®    focus on basic requirements of both state and federal laws

®    provide in-depth look at new overtime exemptions

®    cover frequently violated laws such as recording hours of work away from the employer’s place of business, rules regarding breaks, computing pay for travel and meeting time, and legal deductions from wages

®    Others laws will be covered such as the Family and Medical Leave Act, I-9 Form requirements, Medical Payments Law, Controlled Substance testing, and Polygraph Testing laws.

The goal is to provide information directly from enforcement agency representatives as an alternative to higher cost seminars sponsored by commercial vendors.
The seminars will be conducted by both state and federal wage and hour officials. The officials will be available to answer questions and concerns. Each participant will be given a wage and hour notebook, which will be a valuable resource for future questions and reference. Registration fees: $50.00 for Chamber members, Non-Members will be charged $65.00 ($50.00 initial registration with Department of Labor and $15.00 at event door).  Registration for the seminars is required by February 14, 2008.  Please visit http://www.nclabor.com/wh/seminars.htm for registration details and a complete agenda.
The Chamber Seminar Series will continue April 16th, June 12th, August 6th, and October 29th.  Please visit www.clevelandchamber.org for details concerning future topics and locations.  For more information about the series or to request certain topics, please contact Stephanie Trogdon, 704-487-8521.
