“If you have been to Uptown Shelby lately, you may have noticed a change at the Cleveland County Chamber office building.  It was a team effort to get this major beautification project completed.” Said Steve Padgett, Board Chairman.   “The Chamber is proud of its “front door” and wishes to thank those responsible for the work and the financing.”

Thanks to the generosity of Reid and Chuck Lowery, PPG Industries, Phil Acres Garden Club, and Raper/Roark Trust Fund, The Chamber building, 200 Lafayette Street, has received extensive landscaping and fresh paint inside and out.

Reid and Chuck Lowery donated the Japanese Maple Trees that flank each side of the entry to The Chamber in memory of their wife and mother, Brenda.  “Mom loved her town and was forever donating her time and energy to do whatever she could to help improve the quality of life.” Said her son, Chuck.

Tim Mathis, Plant Manager of PPG Industries, generously donated all the paint and labor for the inside and outside painting project.  “The Chamber is definitely the county’s “front door.” Said Tim Mathis. “ PPG Industries is pleased to be part of this project.”

The name Jean Warrick is synomous with landscaping.  When the Phil Acres Garden Club decided to disband, Jean Warrick was given the honor of finding a worthy garden project to be the recipient of their beautification fund.   “The Chamber is very pleased that Jean deemed The Chamber landscaping project worthy of this gift.” Said Steve Padgett.

Les Roark and Rev. Sam Raper of the Raper/Roark Trust Fund generously donated any remaining money necessary to complete the landscaping project which consisted of an irrigation system, preparing the soil and planting the trees, flowers and shrubs.  The Raper/Roark Trust has been instrumental in other beautification projects in the Uptown area.

“Many thanks to our team of dedicated volunteers who worked on this project for over a year; Mark Hudson, Janet Berry, Tim Mathis, Michael Johnson, and Sandy Smith.” Said Steve Padgett.
